2024-03-12 Working in the heat

I started as early as I could, since I knew that without the cooling tradewinds my office would heat up quickly. The winds are light to non-existent and the sun is already burning down at 09:00.  I’ve had my coffee and have switched to water as the morning progresses.

During my lunch break I spliced the new automatic bilge pump sensor into the electrics and installed it deep into the bilge.

Access is very limited and it took quite a bit of sweat getting the replacement unit screwed into the original holes. Once that task was completed I went back to work on the computer.

Afternoon

It remained hot and sunny and I mounted two of my remaining flat solar panels on the bimini, in the hopes that they are still producing power. The thin and flat solar panels are built differently from the standard heavy panels and have a much shorter lifespan, particularly in the Caribbean sun and heat. I’ve been told that getting 5 years from them is pretty good and mine are quite a bit older. The ones glued on the forward deck are certainly fading away and will need replacing.

Evening

I went ashore to the Soggy Dollar for a cold drink and some company, and managed to locate one group of sailors and visitors who’d decided to do some heavy drinking. I had too many beers and when I managed to extricate myself I knew I’d exceeded my capacity, particularly as I’d not eaten anything since some toast and an egg for breakfast. I returned to the boat and made 2 hot dogs and soon retired for the evening, lulled to sleep by the incessant thump of bass coming from the live band ashore.
