2023-02-24 Working Friday

Today was a working Friday. A long work day in the virtual office with what felt like little progress made. But some days are destined to be just like that.

It got windy in the morning. Very strong winds accompanied a frontal boundary which passed mainly to the north over Anguilla. But we also felt the effect in Grand Case.

I was surprised to see large patches of Sargassum drift by the boat, I’d never seen any in Grand Case before. Many of the islands in the Windward island chain are suffering greatly from the increased amounts of this algae in recent years.

Afternoon

I took another swim around the boat to remove more of the bottom growth and see that I really need to get my tanks filled and to do a dive session to get the rudder, keel and prop shaft freed of growth.

Sunset

Just before sunset I headed ashore to drop off the garbage and get some bread while taking a long walk. The bakery was already closed but I got a snack at Max’s Place and watched the sun set. On my way back to the boat I stopped at Renegade to tell them that I’d move should they need me to while raising their chain. They invited me aboard and we chatted for a while before I returned to Zanshin for the night after a working Friday.

  1. Hello! We stayed in Grand Case the spring before Irma. We are coming back the first week in April this year staying near the Rainbow Cafe. I just saw some information about sargassum. Is it in Grand Case? How bad is it around St. Martin?
    Thank you!

    1. Sargassum is bad this season on St. Martin and other islands down the chain. The east coast beaches are particularly badly hit. Grand Case is well shielded and seldom has Sargassum washing up, but recent weather with very light winds and winds from the west have changed that. Sunset Beach, Maho, Simpson Bay and more have pileups ashore while Orient is clear. Once the standard trades return the situation will return to normal. Since Grand Case is a large horseshoe shaped beach you will always be able to find a sargassum-free area somewhere.
