The French island of Saint Barthélemy

The island is not a full Departement of France, but a collectivité d’outre-mer. It was, in times past, one of the poorer locations in the island chain because the terrain didn’t lend itself to planting sugar cane. Now the island is well-known among the jet-set and ultra-rich as one of the premiere destinations.

Despite the hefty prices of almost everything in Gustavia, the capital (and only) town, there are wonderful free anchorages around the island that make it a wonderful destination for those who don’t have deep pockets.

The airport is famous for its steep approach and makes for an interesting diversion from the pristine beaches dotted around. I like to anchor in Anse a Colombier, it is in my top 5 anchorage list. Usually at the top of the list.

The uninhabited nature reserve of Ile Fourchue, halfway between St. Barths and St. Martin, is also a perfect place to get away for a day of diving or a quiet night aboard.
