2016 Trip 2016-03-23

Those who have followed the blog pages for this year might have noticed a relative paucity of comments and details for the past days. This is due to me managing to completely trash the contents of my PC aboard and my backup is currently thousands of miles away. It started with the Windows 10 boot process, it would show me the BIOS screen and the usual notifications during booting and then, when I expected to see the Windows logo and a login screen, I’d get just a black screen. I repeated the boot process many times, attempting the options on the recovery menus; all to no avail. I managed to get into the basic recovery mode and backup the data I had onto a USB drive, but couldn’t get normal Windows to boot up. In the end, I resorted to doing a clean install (after the partial re-install had the same problems with the black screen). Much to my chagrin, the exact same thing happened during the clean install as well. Then, in a flash of insight, I went to the back of my monitor and pushed the HDMI connector ALL the way in and suddenly I had my screen back…

At least I’d saved my pictures and data, but all of the programs that I use were gone and I had no internet with a bandwidth of several gigabytes of data (Adobe’s Lightroom and Photoshop and Dreamweaver software are huge) so I put the blog on hold for a while. All of this happened right at the beginning of the trip, and I didn’t get the software downloaded and activated until yesterday and I’ve spent the past 2 days catching up on the blog entries and pictures. As of today I’ll be back to doing my daily diary entries in near real time!

My old hosting company, who will remain unnamed although their name starts with “go” and the end rhymes with “baddy”, changed their software with little notice and the original SV-ZANSHIN.COM site stopped working overnight.

Every.  Single.  Page.

So I’ve transitioned to another provider. These original pages have been migrated, but all the formatting and other features are gone and the will still contain numerous display issues and formatting anomalies.

The manual effort of conversion is too much and not worth the effort involved. Over 1000 blog diary pages like this one are going to remain in this condition. The pictures are full-scale, but won’t expand when clicked. But you can can copy them to view them in their original splendour.
