Summer 2010 Vacation Trip 2010-05-24

Monday, May 24, 2010

I had spent some time at the bar the night before talking with some British reporters and news folk who were reporting on the big set of Cricket matches between the “Windies” (West Indies) and South Africa that were going on. I pity one of them today, as he was quite far under the weather and I’m sure he regretted his partying if he had to work outside at the match in the tropical heat today. I woke up at 8am and proceeded with a leisurely breakfast and wanted to extend my stay for a late departure, but they said that wasn’t possible so I checked out at noon and drove around the island for a while – hitting Fig Tree Drive again and Falmouth as well as downtown St. John’s but everything was closed as it is not only past the prime tourist season but it was also a national holiday today. I took another route back and drove past the stadium in the hopes that I could sneak a peek through the fence, but that was not possible. I ended up going to a beach close to the airport in order to get my change of clothes ready (solid lace-up shoes, long pants and a collared shirt for the flights but I didn’t want to wear heavy clothing until the last possible minute) and re-checked my return flight confirmation and shocked to see 15:50 instead of 17:50 departure! I burned rubber on the rental car and pulled up at the check-in counter to see no people and one lady reading a book. I asked if I could still check-in to the Condor flight and she gave me a strange look and said “Of course” – it turns out that my printout was wrong and that I did, indeed, still have 2 hours to the flight. I checked in anyway and then returned the rental car and am now sitting in the departure lounge typing this update.

My old hosting company, who will remain unnamed although their name starts with “go” and the end rhymes with “baddy”, changed their software with little notice and the original SV-ZANSHIN.COM site stopped working overnight.

Every.  Single.  Page.

So I’ve transitioned to another provider. These original pages have been migrated, but all the formatting and other features are gone and the will still contain numerous display issues and formatting anomalies.

The manual effort of conversion is too much and not worth the effort involved. Over 1000 blog diary pages like this one are going to remain in this condition. The pictures are full-scale, but won’t expand when clicked. But you can can copy them to view them in their original splendour.
