2024-04-14 Working on Zanshin

Early in the morning

My neck was only a little sore when I got up early this morning; I’d not spent too much time in that unnatural position up on deck after all.

Things at work are busy at the moment, and my Starlink’s demise has come at a particularly inopportune moment. So, I logged into my virtual office and found a page full of mails, most of which I had to act upon. I had a busy morning working and the SIM-Data card was noticeably slower than Starlink; causing an annoying lag between keyboard entry and screen update.  In addition, there’s a swell coming into the anchorage which wasn’t on the weather charts, and it is making it a bit uncomfortable aboard since I have to keep the glasses from spilling and plates from sliding.

Noon

The first task was to move the Starlink attachment point on the bimini and then to test the new cable that Phil kindly supplied from his mothballed Starlink. Moving the mounting point to a more secure position went quickly, then I had to redo the work, as I’d installed it upside-down.

Surprise, the new cabling worked and my Starlink has been resurrected! The difference in connectivity is noticeable compared to the SIM-card; and I hope that I can continue to use this old system until the new one arrives.

Afternoon

|I’m going to mount the secondary battery charger below the navigation station before it gets too hot in here.  I’d purchased the necessary cables, lugs and mounting hardware the previous week and didn’t expect any big problems. But the little ones (such as pulling the cables through the narrow conduits) took quite a bit of time. Nonetheless, I managed to complete that task and now have a solid electrical charging scheme for the small 12V house bank.

Ashore for Happy Hour

It was high time to go ashore and escape the rolling motion of the boat. I had a beer and sat in a back corner today while watching the crowd and only exchanged a couple of short discussions before departing. I did a bit of grocery shopping across the street including some eggs for breakfast and then returned to Zanshin.
