2024-03-27 Rolling about in Simpson Bay

Deceptively Calm

The winds are down, and the swell is barely visible, but it still has enough power to keep Zanshin (and her contents, mainly me) rolling about in the anchorage. Because of the temporary wind direction, a lot of sargassum has washed up on the beaches in Simpson Bay; this seldom happens here.

Noon

The storms to the north have stopped the Tradewinds and are driving winds from the north and the west. They have also brought in some clouds and mild rain. I opted to head ashore and docked at the SMYC before walking to the Market Garden supermarket where I paid tourist prices for some groceries including a small steak which will be the main course for dinner tonight.

I made it back to Zanshin just as the rains hit and right now, I’ve got all the hatches shut and it is hot and sticky down here. I hope that by the time I plan on cooking dinner it will be dry up there.

Afternoon

The sous-vide circulator is running and warming up my vacuum-sealed steak to a nice 59C and will keep it there until I’m ready to fire up the BBQ. I’ve got a Zoom conference from 19:00-20:00 tonight with the crew of our race boat in the upcoming Newport-Bermuda race and I won’t be cooking until after that. I might have started my sous-vide cooking a mite early, but it is too late now to refrigerate the steak again. Perhaps I’ll eat early.

Dinner

I made my first BBQ of the season today, squeezing it in prior to my conference call. I’d forgotten how good a sous-vide and BBQ combination can taste!
