2024-03-06 New batteries

Morning

I worked online in my virtual office until 14:00. Nothing worth writing about here happened there.

Afternoon

Once I’d shut down my computer, I dinghied into Island Waterworld and purchased the first group of house bank batteries. I got 6x 100Ah Lead-Carbon batteries and had some help loading them into the dinghy. Each weighs in at 33Kg which is just manageable, the larger batteries are unwieldy for one person to carry and move about.

I got the batteries moved from the dinghy to the transom, then drank a tall glass of water. Then I moved the batteries from the transom to the top of the companionway and drank another glass of water. Next I moved the batteries down the companionway to the cabin sole and had yet another glass of water. By this time my shirt was soaked.

Next I removed the two temporary batteries and installed the 6 new ones. As my house bank is 24V and the batteries are 12V, I had to connect 2 in series and then parallel those with the next set.  This took time, as I had to be careful working with the potentially lethal electrical components. But in the end I hooked up the system and charged it for while – I now had 300Ah (at 24V) house bank capacity!

What I also had was back, arm and leg fatigue. After I washed the sweat and grime off in the shower, I headed off to the Soggy Dollar. The pain was quickly alleviated there. After rehydrating and chatting I walked down the street for a filling meal at Little Jerusalem and this time I managed to finish the portion as I was very hungry.
