Early morning

Breakfast for the volunteers

I got up early so that I could be at the PdP Marina by 07:00. I wanted a cup of fresh coffee aboard Zanshin for breakfast and also wanted to take a shower before leaving. I was there in good time and had another coffee from the percolator, plus a fresh croissant to get me going.

We got underway in the catamaran and waited for the special 08:00 bridge opening that would let us escape the lagoon and head out into the outside waters. Our committee boat was to anchor off Cole Bay, quite a ways offshore in relatively deep water. We had an anchor extension roll of line, but it turned out that our chain had sufficient scope to keep us in place.

Once on station we got the flags arranged and as soon as the racers, who had taken the next bridge, approached we started identifying the boats and checking them off our list. This wasn’t always easy, particularly the Diam24 trimaran class was difficult, as the had two number 11s and two number 417 and not all the boats had a visible name.

Racing

The racing began on time at 10:00 and we got all the classes started and set up our finish line. We had 7 classes and 5 of those finished at our boat and we had to send them off on the second course of the day. We had some glitches, but none of them were noticed by the racers so all in all it was a good day.

After the final finisher on the second race came through the line we weighed anchor and headed back to Simpson Bay in order to get the next inbound bridge opening. Our skipper was ruthless and determined and we soon found ourselves at the front of the long line of returning boats.

We gathered at the bar and cooled ourselves down with cold libations, and soon the prizegiving ceremonies rolled around. Once those were over, I headed off to an early dinner and a restful sleep.
