2024-02-07 Off to Carriacou

The morning ferry from St. Georges to Tyrell Bay on Carriacou leaves at 09:00. I’d arranged a pickup from the local taxi driver, Boney, at 07:30 since I didn’t know if there would be closed roads due to the Independence Day celebrations. He arrived on time and said that the ferry usually departs at 08:00 rather than 09:00 on holidays. This wasn’t good news at all but he put on his race-driver game face and drove very fast. Luckily the roads were empty and we made the trip in 30 minutes, I’d driven the same route two days earlier and had needed 50 minutes. Once there, it turned out that the ferry didn’t leave until 09:00 after all.

The ferry was bigger than I thought and was quite nice inside, with an enclosed air-conditioned cabin. We left on time (well, only 10-15 minutes late – but that’s still pretty good) and the first half of the trip was in protected waters in the lee of Grenada. Then we hit open water and there was a pronounced roll and occasional lurch.

I’d met two guests who were still staying at La Sagesse on the ferry, they’d left earlier than I did in a separate cab. They wanted to walk around Hillsborough but I recommend that they go to the Paradise Beach Club and take the launch across to Sandy Island.

A driver called Junior picked me up and I took the other 2 along to the beach club, stopping there for a noon libation before continuing up the hill to my accommodation the Tree Tops. The loft is very nice and I soon settled down in the comfortable hammock and read my book – I was far too lazy to go anywhere and enjoyed the view and relaxation immensely.

I made a small dinner with the food the hosts had provided for me and soaked up the view from the top of the hill.
