2023-05-25 Coffee Plantation

The morning was fraught with computer problems, but I was looking forward to the afternoon coffee plantation tour and that kept me going.

A new Microsoft Windows 11 update fluttered in this morning, and I applied it. It installed, then rebooted and I had a black screen with some “Applying updates” text. Which didn’t go away. After 30 minutes I realized that I was in trouble. All in all, it took almost 2 hours to get my system up and running again.

Noon

Time to head off towards Basseterre with Carol and Tom.  The map shows the coastal road meandering all the way south to our destination, Basseterre. What the map didn’t show (but we should have inferred) was the sharp rises and descents. And narrow turns.  All of which meant I spent a lot of time shifting from 2nd back up to 5th and down again.

But we finally made it to town and followed some very confusing signs towards our first destination, Fort Louis Delgres. One sign had us go into what looked like a dead-end one-way street; but there was a hidden arrow pointing right that got us to the fort’s parking lot.

Afternoon

We then had to back-track to head up the hill to the Vanibel Plantation and the tour that we’d made reservations for. Unfortunately for us, it was in French and while I managed to follow along, Carol and Tom had to read an English description which didn’t cover the 2 hour tour that the owner presented aurally.

Return

It was a long way back to Deshaies. Instead of the coastal road, we decided to go around the south end of the island and zip up the highway. It remained a very long return ride, but easier on my left foot – not so many gear shifts were necessary…

We made it back in time to see the opening of our Coin du Pecheurs restaurant and we had a wonderful meal (again).
