2023-04-02 Windy Simpson Bay

Morning
Choppy waters and windy Simpson Bay
Choppy waters

I’m not sure I understand why the rolling gets less at night and picks up again in the morning with the rising sun. It’s windy in Simpson Bay today, but that didn’t start until after sunrise. I had to be careful making my coffee just now, as it threatened to topple the filter. Pouring the boiling water without spilling wasn’t easy, either.

The first outbound bridge of the day had some pretty yachts exit. And the megayacht Dreamboat is anchored off in the distance.

It is still very rolly here and I am debating going ashore today and hiking rather than remain aboard. But there are numerous tasks that I want to complete, so I’ll just have to deal with the conditions. At least it is warm and sunny and I’m healthy.

I’ve managed to make a complete mess of my cockpit. I added a USB-Card reader and extender from Raymarine to my navigation pod. But what I didn’t think of was that drilling that hole was going to create lots of shavings. The strong and gusty wind did the rest. Because of the eddies in the cockpit, I can’t just sweep them up as they just fly around again. Now I’ve got the reader installed and have updated the 5Gb Lighthouse 4 software on the chart plotter.

I cleaned up some gummy and dirty parts of the generator, swept up some shavings from the chartplotter, washed the dishes, and checked my e-mail. I think that counts as a partial success.

The boat is still rockin’ and rollin’ and the winds are whipping up the water here in the anchorage. I haven’t made it off the boat yet, and it is 15:30 already. It is still very windy in Simpson Bay and there’s no sign of that abating. I want to go ashore now, but it is too early. I know that if I go into the dinghy dock at the SMYC I’ll “have” to get a frothy beverage and I can’t start this early.

Evening

I went ashore late and missed the final bridge opening, but there was little traffic in any case. Pizza at Pizza & CO was my destination. I had my first truly bad eating experience on island tonight. The menu appeared promptly and I ordered a drink and a pizza. The drink arrived shortly thereafter. I finished it after 30 minutes but nobody thought to ask if I wanted another, and after an hour I walked inside, paid for the beer, and left. Waiting over an hour for a simple pizza plus lack of service means I won’t return.
