Ahh, the joys of owning and maintaining a boat. The winds are still up, as are the waves, so today is going to be another work-on-the-boat-in-paradise day. After an early breakfast I started working on tracing down an error in the Spectra watermaker which is causing it to shutdown; I’ve disable the error message on the panel but need to figure out if the part is really broken or just has loose wiring. I found the control panel of the Spectra, attached a spare USB cable to it and used the manufacturer’s software to cross-check whether that was the only problem and then dinghied across the lagoon to ELECTEC to see if they had a replacement probe. At $120 it is too expensive to just buy, so I’ll have to go through the warranty process and see what Spectra does. I’m still making water but have gone through 4 pairs of filters so far in this somewhat dirty water; those filters are going to get washed down, scrubbed with a toothbrush, then dried out and re-used so it is not a total loss.
Upon return I finally attacked some of the outside issues. I don’t know who came up with the term “stainless steel”, but he certainly has duped generations of gullible sailors such as myself into thinking that rust was now a thing of the past. All of my stainless steel that had been exposed to caustic saltwater (which means pretty much every single piece outside) needed more or less of TLC and an application of Prism Polish. I did the major spots, including the bimini support poles and will have to check the internet to see what can be done about removing rust stains from Sunbrella material.
I had dinner aboard, the rest of Carmen’s Bolognese sauce with some pasta and garlic bread but tomorrow I’ll have to get some fresh vegetables and salad to balance my diet.
