Grenada

Grenada is known as the friendly island and that appellation is correct. I opted to head south from Martinique in 2023 to avoid tropical storm Bret, and St. Lucia looked as if it would be right in the storm’s path, so I continued south to Grenada.

The northernmost island belonging to Grenada is Carriacou. It has some beautiful beaches and anchorages but there’s precious little available ashore. But it is charming, and the people are friendly.

The cruisers congregate in the southwestern Tyrell Bay while the main city of Hillsborough sees few sailors because the dock is so decrepit that it is actually dangerous to use. There are a couple of grocery stores, but finding fresh produce requires patience, good timing and checking out each store. Rum is, of course, always available.

I haven’t sailed to the main island yet, but since the airport is there, I’ve visited from land and found a wonderful hotel, La Sagesse, where I can decompress for a couple of days before and after each trip.
