U.S. Virgin Islands
The U.S. Virgin Islands consist of 3 larger islands: St. John, St. Thomas, and St. Croix. They are a territory of the United States of America. It is strange to fly out of the airport and have to clear both customs and immigration despite flying to a destination on the mainland.
St. John
Most of St. John is a national park, mainly due to the work of Laurance Rockefeller. Cruz Bay is the only town and the anchorages and bays on the northern side are wonderful. Anchoring is restricted and the use of NPS park buoys are limited to a certain number of nights per year per boat.
St. Thomas
This is the main island of the U.S. Virgin Islands. It is a cruise ship destination as well as home of the international airport. I’ve flown into and out of St. Thomas many times and used the ferry to get to the British Virgin Islands because it is much cheaper, and there’s a better selection of flights.
St. Croix
This is the most remote of the USVI, situated far to the south. I haven’t had an opportunity to visit there yet.
