I first sailed to St. Lucia at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. This was while trying to escape the clutches of the BVI. I’ve become attached to this island and its people. It is situated relatively far south in the Caribbean chain and lies between Martinique and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

The marina at Rodney Bay is well-protected. Even though the island is within the hurricane zone, no storm damage has happened there in years. The marina is in the Gros Islet area of the island. This is in the far north of the island. The capital city of Castries lies just to the south and the international airport is located a very long way south.

Despite the lengthy trip between the marina and airport, I’ve made this the new temporary home for Zanshin during the hurricane season. The price is right, and people are friendly. And I’ve discovered the FunToSee ferry that makes the airport journey a lot more palatable.

The two iconic volcanic plugs are the island’s most famous landmark, and I still plan on hiking one of them some time. Each time I came close to planning the excursion we had heavy rains and that makes the hike somewhat treacherous, in addition to being exhausting.
