Dominica
Dominica is one of my favourite destinations. The island has a history of both English and French occupation and their culture reflects both worlds. There is also a Kalinago reservation (Carib Indians) left on the windward side. The main cruising anchorage is in the north at Portsmouth, while the capital city of Roseau is to the south. This lush island is off the major beaten path and few cruise ships or tourists visit. This makes it an ideal destination for those seeking a less structured visit. Few tourist stores or restaurants exist, and there are no resorts as far as I know. There are many hiking trails to explore, as well as waterfalls and a boiling lake.
Portsmouth
The Indian River in Portsmouth is a popular cruiser destination and the PAYS association keeps the anchorage safe as well as providing other services for cruising boats. The anchorage is generally well-protected and the holding is good, although there are a lot of mooring balls of questionable provenance close inshore. Further out it gets deeper, but there’s plenty of room for everyone.
The anchorage is overlooked to the north by Fort Shirley which has been mostly restored. The beaches in Portsmouth are short and steep, but just to the north and south one can find beautiful, and mostly empty, beaches.
