The islands of Guadeloupe
The main island looks like a butterfly when viewed on a map. The West side (Basse-Terre) is mountainous and volcanic, the East side (Grande-Terre) is flat. There are several outlying islands and island groups, my absolute favourite is the little group between Guadeloupe and Dominica, called the Îles des Saintes.
It is a French départements et régions d’outre-mer which means that clearing in and out is simple, good food is readily available at restaurants and supermarkets and one needs a bit of French to get by.
I’ve spent many weeks at anchor in the Saintes, they are beautiful and the anchorage behind the Pain de Sucre is one of my all-time favourites.
The hike up to Le Chameau is also a highlight, despite being rather strenuous.
