We’ve gotten into a morning groove with a full breakfast that has us ready around 10:30 in the morning; although we are up early it takes a while to get going with breakfast. Today we didn’t get to the Portsmouth town docks until about 11:30 and the Saturday market was already winding down but it was still fun to see all the fresh local produce. There was, as is usual here in the Caribbean, a lot of shouting and noise going on which wouldn’t fit in back in Europe but is absolutely normal here. We walked the town streets and saw the architectural marvel or monstrosity which is the “Pink House” and then went to the mouth of the Indian River and rented a car for two days. The drive to Roseau and up to the Trafalgar Falls showed that the 2015 tropical storm “Erika” really did a lot of damage to the island and that the infrastructure and economy is still recovering.
We walked around the main city of Roseau for a while and there were really very few other tourists walking about, after finishing our shopping we drove up the road towards Trafalgar Falls; I use that expression since I managed to take a wrong turn somehow and ended up on another road which took us way up the hills but away from the falls. But in the end we made it up the final steep stretch and enjoyed the empty falls, as just 2 other cars with tourists were in the parking lot. I took a cooling swim in one of the pools below the falls and after drying off we headed back to the car and planned on driving to the Emerald Pool, but I’d messed up my driving again and we got on the wrong road. So in the end we returned to Portsmouth and had a happy hour drink at the “Purple Turtle”, meeting my friend Captain Mark, his German friend, and his local business partner, Spesh, who will give us a tour on Monday. After drinks and donating about a third of our blood to the bugs flying around at sunset (those mosquitoes showed a marked disdain for German fly-sprays) we returned to the boat and made a mixed dinner of potatoes and steak/Chorizo.
