The big storm that hit the U.S. northeast coast finally made itself felt here in the BVI, bringing in a swell from the NE that arrived in Cane Garden Bay about 3 in morning, making Zanshin roll around significantly every couple of minutes when the boat swung on the mooring and put itself broadside to the incoming waves. When I got up in the morning the surf was already breaking outside the bay so I knew it was time to head elsewhere. I set sail for Sandy Spit but when I got there the swell had picked up even more and despite the protection from the reef the few boats there were already rocking around, so I opted to tuck myself in at Diamond Cay / Long Bay off Jost van Dyke for a couple of hours before heading to Great Harbour for the evening. In the mid to late afternoon some heavy winds and squalls came through the anchorage so I kept on putting off my departure until it was late enough in the day to make me revise my plans and I decided to remain for the night. Foxy’s Taboo ashore looked closed and there were only 4 boats in the Bay so I assumed that they weren’t going to open for business and I thawed out some hamburgers and corn-on-the-cob, threw out the remaining salad, and chose to use the galley below rather than fight the BBQ in the high winds outside.
Entertainment was free, a big catamaran came in after dark and spent a good 30 minutes attempting to pick up a mooring ball. It was better than TV – the show had drama, shouting, cheering, lots of engine revving and even had a happy Hollywood ending (although that was in doubt until the last heroic attempt by 3 or 4 gents on the bow).
