2025-04-27 Antigua Sailing Week 2025, Day 1

It begins

ASW Day 1 started with a bit of hectic work. Zed and I had coffee aboard Zanshin, then made our way ashore for our 08:00 muster aboard the committee boat. We made it off the docks with nary a problem and motored out of Falmouth Harbour. The crew had reset the black buoy that we were going to use.

Unfortunately, as we were in the process of picking it up, we realized that it was very far from the published location. Luckily, the powerboat that set it was nearby. We got the heavyweight mooring and line reset. But that didn’t give us much time to prepare for the first day of racing, and we were quite busy all the way through until the first starts.

Afternoon

After finishing all of the starts for the day and eating our lunch, we had nothing left to do. There is a separate “Finish Boat” this year, so the two duties were separated.  Unfortunately, we couldn’t return to the docks, as the rules specify time limits for race protests, and the clock starts ticking once the committee vessel docks. This meant that we had a long time to wait. Once the last racer finished, we could depart our station and head back to shore. It was a long ASW Day 1 for us.

After the prizegiving, it was time to decide what to do for dinner. Most of the committee crew ended up going to Indian Summer ashore. The food was as good as we’d remembered, but the prices seemed to have gone up significantly since last year. I think that, without exception, we were tired from both our work and feasting. Everyone returned to their respective quarters and called it an early night.
