Around the Island Race
Committee boat at the dock
The committee boat at the dock

The early start to this long around the island race meant that Zed and I had to get up even earlier and make it to the committee boat by 07:00. After our wake-up coffee, we ran the dinghy across the anchorage and tied up at the dock.

The other committee boat was kind enough to leave the dock and let us escape our corner slot. We motored out to the start area and were in the process of picking up our mooring when we realized that this was far out of position. It wasn’t even close to where it should be. We had no option but to motor to the correct location and “hover” there. With the windage on the large catamaran, this proved to be a lot of work. After we had the orange pin in position, I had a transit on land that I could work with to keep the angle correct, but that meant I was askew to the wind, and our line kept on getting longer.

In the end we managed to get all the classes off on their race around the island and returned ashore. I count myself lucky, as the finish boat had the same problem, but they had to “hover” for 2 hours!

Once ashore, we had little work to do. I did attend the bareboat skippers’ briefing held by Paul Jackson and Corrado from Sunsail/Moorings.
