2025-04-08 Cleanup on Aisle 1

No Diesel smell

There was no diesel smell in the boat anymore overnight and no evidence of a new leak. I’ll refill the tank and put the boat back together after my day job. This also means that my departure for ports to the north will not be postponed any further.

Of course, the expedited shipment for the water pump is messed up. I deposited the €160 for the additional tax in an envelope at the Capitainerie yesterday, and they informed me that the shipment would arrive the following day. Yet I just checked the Chronopost website, and it stated that they won’t deliver again until they get instructions from me.  I requested delivery at the earliest time possible, but that won’t be until tomorrow. So, the “expedited service” turned out to be a waste of money.

Noon

It is lunchtime now, and I’ve transferred 200l of diesel from the canisters into the tank so far. Soon, the level will be high enough that I’ll seal up the tank and start filling from the top. I’ll still use the filter and pump to shift from “dirty” to “clean” canisters.

Afternoon

I’ve now completed most of the transfer; only about 40l left. Those were the first leakage spills I collected, and there’s going to be both water and debris in there. I put the top half of each canister through the filter, and it looked clean, but the bottom half of both containers and the 10l of water bottles I used are going to the waste site.

I had not spilled much during my work, but as I reached for the open covering, a bigger dinghy or boat went by. The resultant wake got the tank’s contents shifting, so I had to quickly cover the hole with my palm to prevent it from slopping out.

Work was made easier by today’s cloud cover and the resulting cooler temperatures belowdecks. Despite this, I’ve drenched my t-shirt and consumed a lot of water. The two hatches in the aft cabin are blocked by the boat parts I’ve removed, so it is a bit stifling back there. I’m taking a break from work now and am cooling off at the computer.

Happy Hour and Dinner

I continued working aft a bit longer, but at 5 PM, it was time for a happy hour beer. The local brew is called Lorraine, and it is acceptable. It was cold from the fridge and disappeared very quickly. But I still had some work to do, so didn’t have another until dinner at Ti Toques ashore.
