2025-03-31 Diesel Woes in Martinique

Diesel Woes

The smell of diesel now permeates the boat. I fear that I ruptured the main 400l fuel tank while refuelling and now have a leak that drips about a litre of diesel into the bilges every two hours. I’m in the process of determining how to get the fuel out of the tank and get it removed / turned over to inspect the damage.

At the same time, I’ve got my feelers out to see if I can source a replacement tank. The tank itself is a rotomolded plastic one and I gather that they can be repaired – assuming that the machinery and skill set is available locally.

I have a manual pump that I use every couple of hours to empty the bilge under the tank and so far, I’ve removed about 30 litres, but I’m running out of storage capacity.

Originally, I only had 2 days in the marina, as it is high-season, and they are booked. But I managed to extend by a week and now have a bit more time to figure out what to do.
