2024-04-21 Passage to Antigua

04:30 Wakeup

I hadn’t set an alarm but didn’t sleep well and chose to get up and make a coffee in preparation for departing sometime before sunrise. It was rolly out in Colombier and I turned on the engine and lights and proceeded to lower the day shape and weigh the anchor. I departed at 05:30 and put in 2 reefs in both sails.

The weather forecast had been for 0.5m waves and winds less than 10 knots. Reality was very, very different. I had winds of over 20 knots all day, sometimes sustained to 30. I passed through 4 heavy rain bands and got quite wet.

I’d opted to tow the dinghy due to the light conditions, but despite lengthening the rode to over 100 feet it still got some “air time”.

Afternoon

It was so wet during the passage from rain and smashing into waves that I didn’t bring out the camera. I’d also not prepared the boat sufficiently for the conditions and now I’ve got a lot of cleaning up to do. Some hatches were closed but not fully battened so they leaked. Other items weren’t secured and flew about. Even the headliner in the forward cabin dropped because I’d not finished securing it.

Arrival
Rainshowers at Jolly Harbour
Showers at Jolly Harbour

I arrived at Jolly Harbour at 17:30 and anchored quite far out since I didn’t know the waters and the whole harbour is quite shallow. I was tired from the passage and didn’t start cleaning up – but I did put the thawed out small ribeye in the sous vide while having a celebratory happy-hour drink.

The steak was good, although I’d neglected to buy the potato that usually accompanies it and I’d also not set the rice cooking before putting the steak on the BBQ. So, I used the hot sauce mix on 2 pieces of toast and grilled that. That means my meal had some carbohydrates to go with the protein.

I didn’t read more than a page in my book before falling asleep.
