2024-02-21 Preparing to splash

Morning office work

I had several morning calls to complete and some additional online computer work to take care before I could head off to Tyrell Bay and work on the boat. These lasted longer than I had planned and I didn’t get to the boatyard until the early afternoon.

The house battery bank is 100% “toast”. I have 2 solar panels attached to give it a trickle charge during storage and the voltage reads over 24V when the sun is shining, but as soon as the charging stops or I put a load on the system, the voltage sags way down.  The local chandlery, Budget Marine, has run out of the batteries I wanted. I might have to buy 2 very large and heavy 8D cells as a replacement. They are so heavy that I’ll have to find some help in getting them aboard Zanshin.

The boatyard/marina has no fuel dock, so I purchased an additional diesel canister and did 2 full round trips to the old yard with my 3 canisters, for a total of 120l of diesel fuel.

The sail repair isn’t finished yet, but I’m optimistic that Andy will get it done in time for my impending departure.

I was tired and sweaty from the fuel transfer, since getting those 20l canisters up the ladder and then refuelling in the sunshine is strenuous. The work aboard in the sun also added to my exhaustion level. By the time I was finished it was after 5PM and I changed my plans on the return trip from the yard and continued on to the pizzeria in Windward.

This time I looked at the menu closely and saw that they also offered “small pizzas” which fit my appetite and wallet much better. The pizza turned out to be about half the normal pizza size, but I was still hard-pressed to complete it.
