Getting up for work was a bit difficult this morning after last night’s great dinner and excessive refreshments ashore. But luckily my commute was no more than 10 steps. The winds are starting to pick up and it is quite windy here at Sandy Island this morning.
Morning
After a couple of hours of work and feeling the boat hunt back and forth in the winds, I checked the extended forecast. The winds won’t abate for a while and I just don’t trust that undersized and frayed mooring. I waiting for a small lull and proceeded to cast off the lines and motor upwind a bit. I found a good-looking spot in 28 feet and dropped the anchor, playing out chain until I was about even with my old mooring ball. Zanshin was in 20 feet and had a lot of chain out. The boat isn’t going anywhere unless a huge storm hits.
Noon
I worked through the lunch break and called it quits at 15:00. That’s one of the advantages of starting work very early!
But once I was finished office work on this windy day at Sandy Island there wasn’t anywhere I wanted to go. I’m optimistic that the weather will be better tomorrow, although the forecast continues to be for wind overnight.
Evening
Even the sunset wasn’t great today. But there was a bit of excitement as I saw a Canadian-flagged catamaran behind Zanshin go backwards to the wind. Then drift towards another catamaran. There was nobody the drifting boat, so I got in the dinghy to see what could be done. It turned out that there was a powerful current at the time. The catamaran’s centre of swing on the anchor chain is quite far aft, causing it to swing. The couple on the neighbouring boat confirmed that they weren’t drifting but had anchored far too close for the conditions.
