2023-06-13 Swell time in St. Pierre

I’m having a swell time in St. Pierre today. Ocean swell, not really a swell time.

The weather is very settled here today. It is overcast and there have been three bigger rainfalls including one short-lived thunderstorm. Not much wind at all. But since this morning a swell has started coming from the southwest with a very steep wave and short period. The wind has pushed everyone’s stern directly into the waves. While older hull shapes are pointy at both ends, Zanshin‘s sugar scoop means that the waves just pound into the boat. That’s going to make sleep difficult if it continues.

I used an old 1l coffee container to scoop out the water from the dinghy. It took me 80 scoops in total; more rain had come down than I’d thought. Once the dinghy was ready, I got my passport, boat papers and shopping bags and headed to the distant dock. The swell was pushing the dinghies onto the dock, and I’d neglected to load my stern anchor so I made my visit as short as possible. I cleared in, did some grocery shopping and returned to the dock as quickly as I could.

Afternoon and evening

I’m not have a swell time in St. Pierre. Although I’m fortified with fresh baguettes, cheeses and fine salami, I’m quite busy at work. It is 21:00 now and I’m still working remotely; trying to get some problems in production fixed before tomorrow. Sunset was beautiful, but I couldn’t drag myself away from the keyboard to enjoy it, or photograph it.

The only redeeming aspect right now is that the swell (time) here in St. Pierre has passed – the waves have settled sufficiently to no longer be slapping against the hull.
