Decisions, decisions. Should I stay, or should I go? As I wrote that last sentence, the tune and lyrics of the Clash song ran through my mind. The anchorage is beautiful and calm and protected, but somewhat secluded. The weather for travel isn’t optimal and I’m not sure about entering Dominica with my soon-to-expire passport. So I’m tempted to remain here, but know that I should be heading south soon. Decisions, decisions…
Morning
Fridays are always good for me at work, as the virtual office is quiet and I can spend time on tasks that usually get pushed aside during busier times.
Noon
Disaster has struck. My computer, which had been booting at non-deterministic intervals with the dreaded blue screen of death, now became very deterministic and wouldn’t boot. It just cycled between a stopcode screen and then a failed repair attempt.
Fortunately, I had a backup that was less than an hour old. Unfortunately it was on an encrypted drive that I’d just set up and the encryption key was still on the computer. Which I hadn’t uploaded to the cloud yet. I spent several hours trying to get the system booted. I turned off every option in the UEFI BIOS in case a component such as the sound card or network chip might be the root cause. All to no effect. I’ve now set up my old notebook as my main system and have restored a somewhat older backup so at least I can get going again.
But this will take me all weekend just to set up the system correctly – so at least my travel plans are now set.
Afternoon
I took a relaxing break from the computer woes by going swimming. Armed with the scraper and kitchen scrubber, of course. There’s still a lot of growth, but now I exit the water with noticeably less squirming larvae than at first.
Evening
I spent the evening doing setup work on the computer. I made a small meal and had a couple of glasses of wine before giving up and reading a bit in the cockpit.
