2023-04-08 Grumpy Saturday

Even though I returned to the boat shortly after midnight and was tired, I only slept fitfully. Once I was rudely awakened from sleep by the sensation of sliding off the bed. I stopped the movement before getting unceremoniously dumped to floor. Such was the rolling motion at night. So I’m grumpy this Saturday.

I’ve decided to take the 09:30 inbound bridge into the calm anchorage of the inside lagoon. I loaded my 2 diesel canisters into the dinghy, brought along my portable depth-sounder and zipped inside. Just after passing the bridge I noticed the very dark and ominous clouds boiling over the hill. Rather than continuing onwards, I veered towards the SMYC’s protection from the elements. At the bar I ordered pancakes and coffee and sat out the short but very lively shower.

There was a very big fishing boat at the fuel dock, and the attendant told me it would take around 15 minutes before they finished fueling. I used the time to peruse the aisles at Island Waterworld. I escaped on the cheap, having only bought a set of fins to replace my old ones. Once fueled, I scouted the inner harbor for suitable anchoring spots. Those which looked good were all less than 8 feet deep (my draft is about 8.5 feet) and those which had sufficient depth were all taken.

I used the depth-sounder in the outside anchorage to scope out possible anchoring spots. Mark and Marjorie confirmed that the rolling way much, much less closer to shore. I finally found a good new spot that promised calmer conditions and returned to Zanshin. The instruments were fired up and the engine started prior to re-anchoring when I saw a boat enter the anchorage and take exactly that good spot!

Afternoon & Evening

I stayed aboard all day, dealing with the rolling that is still causing things to slide around. I had to use the fixing arms for the stove when I cooked rice for dinner to prevent the pot from sliding. I’m still grumpy this Saturday. Even now I have to hold down my glass, on occasion, to prevent spillage. I’ll re-anchor tomorrow morning, as Mark messaged me and told me about a free spot close to shore.
