2023-03-08 Removed the Genoa

Big Easy leaving

No winds and some swell got Zanshin rolling a bit, but I got some good sleep regardless. Before I started work in the office, I removed the Genoa at sunrise. It was a bit of work to get down, as the luff line had wrapped and small tear made for complications. But with no wind and no waves it was easy to get the sail down on deck.  I didn’t attempt to fold or flake the sail, that would be done later after my office time.

The winds and waves are gone, and Zanshin drifted towards the rusty wreck in the almost non-existent breeze. I looked down and was surprised to see the remains of sunken boat(s) below and was worried that I’d hit them with either my rudder or keel.

But upon snorkeling them I found that I had a couple of feet clearance, after all. Nonetheless I remain a bit wary and was happy when a slight change in wind direction pulled me away from those underwater obstructions.

Lunch

During my lunch break I tried to get the genoa flaked on the foredeck. This would make folding and transporting it easier. I was not successful and ended up doing a very bad wrapping job. Luckily It withstood my winching it up and down into the waiting dinghy!

Afternoon

After completing work on the computer I dinghied into the lagoon and made it to the dinghy dock at Island Waterworld. From there I walked to Sint Maarten Sails and together we manhandled the genoa into the loft.

I asked if (A) the sail could be repaired, and (B) whether it should be repaired. The sailmaker spread out and inspected the sail. Surprisingly, the answer was positive to both questions! I’ve now got the sail on schedule for revamping and won’t be purchasing a new (and rather expen$ive) genoa in the near future. But I will have to wait 2 weeks because they are busy and the sailmaker is off island all of next week. There are certainly worse places to be stuck in than Sint Maarten in the middle of tourist season. I’m glad I removed the Genoa for inspection prior to placing an order for a new sail.

After my happy-hour libation at the SMYC I dinghied across to Buccaneer’s Beach Bar for dinner. It was just as tasty as I’d remembered and, sated, I returned to Zanshin for the night.
