Rocking and rolling all night
It was not among my better nights aboard Zanshin. Rock & Roll is a club activity for me, not a boating one. I was broadside to the incoming north swell all night long, with no respite. Normally the boat is pointed into or away from the swell half the time, so you get periods of calm and then periods of rocking. Not tonight. I had to close the hatches when some small rain showers passed overhead and tried to sleep in the cockpit for a bit. That didn’t work out.
Morning
I made coffee but had to hold everything in place due to the rocking and rolling. Logging into work was no fun at all and after a short while I gave up. I got into the dinghy and zipped across to Pigeon Island to see if that was better protected from the swell. It was, and I went ashore at the marina to get back on dry land and also to eat breakfast. Upon return I lifted the anchor and relocated to Pigeon Island.
Tucked in close to shore the swell isn’t as noticeable, but I am close to the Sandals resort and don’t know about the noise level at night. Even though I dropped anchor in 30 feet of water, when I swing closer to shore, I only have 5 feet below the keel. I did snorkel around the boat and the bottom doesn’t shallow quickly after that and is sandy. The predicted winds for the next couple of days are 0, so I’m not worried about grounding.
Noon
The boat is still rocking a bit, but nothing compared to the last 24 hours. I managed to get some remote office work done and am still hoping that the Starlink RV will ship soon.
I needed to provision and dinghied in the swell into Rodney Bay and shopped at the grocery store. Upon return, I laid back in the cockpit and watched arriving boats anchor.
Happy Hour & Evening
I went ashore to Jambe de Bois for happy hour and was surprised to be alone. As the only customer I had a great view of anchorage and a tasty egg salad sandwich for an early dinner. After the meal I returned to Zanshin and watched a glorious sunset. After listening to music in the cockpit for a couple of songs I decided to go to bed early and catch up on the sleep I’d missed then night before.
